Iconic Loeb Boathouse Makes Layoffs Permanent, Shutters Until Spring 2021

The Loeb Boathouse, an iconic restaurant in New York City’s Central Park, notified the New York Department of Labor on September 8 that layoffs for all 163 of its personnel would be permanent. The restaurant had hoped to bring back the staff members, originally laid off on March 16, 2020. But decreases in tourism have hurt the restaurant industry and the city’s economy.

Much of the business in New York City relies on tourism, according to the New York Times. Broadway, known for its world-class theater productions, brings people from all over the world to the city. And restaurants like the Loeb Boathouse benefit from these visitors.

An unnamed worker at the restaurant said it needs thousands of visitors in order to stay in business, according to Eater New York.
